Sitting atop a 450-foot cliff overlooking Spokane Valley, the tableau of Arbor Crest Wine Cellars’ majestic mansion and rolling wine acreage appear more like a grand scene out of Napa Valley Wine Country than a winery in the Inland Northwest. Constructed in 1924, The Cliff House Estate was the brainchild of inventor Royal Newton Riblet, a mechanical mastermind who choreographed the engineering and design of the estate, in addition to developing patented devices, such as a pattern sprinkler system, a square wheel tractor and a mechanical parking garage. For more than 45 years, the three-story Florentine mansion, gatehouse, stone workshop, more than 4 acres of gardens and 2.5 acres of vineyards and orchards, 6,000 gallon swimming pool and life-size checkerboard all served as components of Riblet’s decidedly lavish home. Since 1984, when Arbor Crest acquired the estate, the winery has offered tastings, festivals and annual events. Architectural drooling aside, the exceptional wine produced here is enough of a reason to make the cliff climb. The views aren’t too bad either.
