This 357-acre state park on the shores of Florida’s Rocky Bayou offers hiking, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, bird watching and camping. During World War II, this area of Florida was used for gunnery and bombing practice, but after the war was over U.S. Air Force Colonel Fred Gannon proposed turning this stretch of land into a state park. In 1966, this area was incorporated into the Florida’s park system. Today, the park preserves old-growth long leaf pine trees and is popular for hiking as well as fresh and saltwater fishing. With three nature trails that meander through the forest and along the shore, keep your eyes peeled for dolphins, otters, brown pelicans, trumpeter swans and rare aquatic plants, such as the pitcher plant and Florida anise. The double access boat ramp provides fishermen and boaters access to the Rocky Bayou, Choctawhatchee Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.
