Vancouver Basics

Natural beauty and sophisticated city living come together in Vancouver, the capital of British Columbia, Canada’s westernmost province. Majestic mountain peaks dominate the skyline, serving as the backdrop for your urban adventure. Take in the outdoors, whether it’s biking along the paved 6-mile seawall that circles the city’s 1,001-acre Stanley Park or detouring to nearby Whistler for a weekend of skiing and snowboarding. You can also hit the city streets, wandering the lively and buzzing neighborhoods of downtown, Gastown and the West End, where culinary stars and cutting-edge independent designers are sprouting up almost overnight.

A multicultural melting pot, Vancouver offers plenty of ethnic eats, a testament to the Thai, Chinese, Japanese and Indian communities that call the city home. Try Tojo’s for sushi, Bao Bei for Chinese and Vij’s for Indian. Wash it all down with British Columbia beer and wines, available at almost every bar and pub. Culture vultures will be pleased, too, thanks to historic and stunning venues such as the Orpheum Theater, the Vancouver Playhouse and dozens of museums and galleries. With locals in love with the splendid surroundings, all manner of sports—skiing, hiking, biking, ice hockey—is celebrated here. The city is home to the beloved Vancouver Canucks.
