West Palm Beach Basics

West Palm Beach
West Palm Beach is a city of palm-lined streets, peaceful waterfront views, quaint shopping districts and historic neighborhoods. This is a coastal city, and much of its industry and entertainment is based around the ocean and the travelers and locals who flock to it.

West Palm Beach is located on Florida’s Gold Coast, so named for the gold that was recovered from Spanish galleons that sank offshore (not to mention the fabled estates and golden bank accounts that sit just across Lake Worth on the island of Palm Beach). The average winter daytime temperature is 74 degrees and around 90 degrees in the summer.

Perhaps the best way to get a feel for the city as well as the lay of the land is to take a tour upon arrival. But not just any tour will give you the true feel of this ocean-side city. The best way to see West Palm Beach and its waters is on the amphibious Dive Duck Tour, the most fun you’ll have touring West Palm Beach without getting wet. The 75-minute, fully narrated, musical tour begins at CityPlace in Downtown West Palm Beach. It is a great way to take a look at the sights and decide which one to explore further later. You’ll ride through throwback neighborhoods then across the bridge to the island of Palm Beach.

On the way, you’ll see and learn about buildings like the Society of Four Arts, Bethesda-by-the Sea Episcopal church, The Breakers hotel and the Flagler museum. Then, you’ll drive right into the calm coastal waters of the Intracoastal Waterway and cruise past the waterfront homes and Peanut Island while listening to tales from the captain and the tour guide. As you make your way back onto land, you’ll continue through the Clematis Street shopping district past Centennial Fountain and will return to the Duck Stop at CityPlace, just in time to plan the rest of your visit to this fabulous coastal city.
