1 City 5 Ways: Munich - Beer Snob

Hofbräuhaus

Grab some beer at Hofbräuhaus.

Oktoberfest gets all the press, but March in Munich is just as much fun. Celebrate Fasching, or Mardi Gras, followed by Starkbierzeit—a Lenten festival honoring strong beer. Prost!

Where to Stay // Mandarin Oriental Hotel
Five-star accommodations in the heart of Munich, complete with skyline views and an elegant cigar bar—all within stumbling distance of the Hofbräuhaus. What more could you ask for?

Breakfast // Café Frischhut
Grab a coffee and Schmalznudel, the Bavarian version of a doughnut, at this 100-year-old bakery. Service begins at 7 a.m. (5 a.m. on Saturdays).

Lunch // Hofbräuhaus
Sure it’s a tourist trap, but even the biggest cynic has to love the Hofbräuhaus. Grab a seat at a century- old table in the Die Schwemme—the first-floor beer hall.

Afternoon // Bier & Oktoberfest Museum
Get a crash course on the origins of beer, Munich’s brewing history and Oktoberfest. You’ll also find a bierstube serving pub grub and steins of Augustiner.

Dinner // Paulaner am Nockherberg
Celebrate the start of Starkbierzeit—Strong Beer Season—with a Paulaner Salvator, but start here with a base of Bavarian staples such as steak with béarnaise sauce. Or try a plate of Obatzda (a Bavarian cheese dish) at Der Hofbräukeller.
