Andrew's Picks: Kansas City

B.B's Lawnside Blues & BBQ

A full slab of barbecue ribs at B.B.'s Lawnside Blues & BBQ.

“Kansas City is all about barbecue, and narrowing down the best spots could be a full-time job,” says Andrew Zimmern, host of Bizarre Foods. “Pork-aholics already know a thing or two about the famed pit-smoked and roasted grub at Arthur Bryant’s or Fiorella’s Jack Stack, but here are three lesser-known places populated by serious fanatics and barbecue devotees.”

Earl Quick’s Bar-B-Q & Catering Co.
Here’s the classic no-frills spot for fall-off-the-bone barbecue. Sidle up to the counter for the legendary burnt ends—the beef brisket’s well-done ends, chopped up and smothered with tangy sauce. They are slightly charred, with the perfect amount of fat. Quick’s is a must for every barbecue lover. 1007 Merriam Lane, 913-236-7228

Danny Edward’s Boulevard BBQ
Formerly Lil’ Jakes, Danny Edward’s tiny barbecue joint recently moved to bigger digs. Now patrons can sit and enjoy heirloom recipes that the Edward family has been passing down since the Great Depression. Opt for big, meaty ribs, tender and juicy turkey or the beef brisket. Better yet, try all three. 2900 Southwest Boulevard, 816-283-0880

B.B.’s Lawnside Blues & BBQ
Everyone knows that nothing pairs with barbecue like a hefty serving of blues music. At B.B.’s Lawnside, you get both. Opt for gigantic slabs of saucy ribs served with pit beans and white bread. The sauce is tart and sweet, and the ribs are arguably the best in the city. And in this city, that’s saying a lot. 1205 East 85th Street, 816-822-7427

Spill It: Tell Us What You Think!

As a KC girl I can verify all are fine options, but really people in KC have a favorite place for individual things. One place for ribs, one for burnt ends, one for brisket, even one for side dishes. And these mostly are places people go because of proximity to their home or work, not because they are the best. Plus the author forget to mention the best part of B.B.'s..the BBQ sundae and amazing live music.

I encourage readers to wait in line at Oklahoma Joe's, it's worth it. And for the love of smoke, try Woodyard. That's where all these places are getting their wood, so try some really good ribs where the smoke is fresh.

I've eaten a lot of BBQ in Kansas City, without a doubt the best I've ever had is Oklahoma Joe's. Perfection on a platter.

Rick in KC
My fave is a lesser-known: Rosedale BBQ, down the street from Danny Edwards, at 600 Southwest Blvd. Lean meats and great fries!

Nicole has it right; KC is blessed with some great places to get your “Q”. My top three:

Upscale and worth it is Jackstack. Smoked prime rib? Check. Meaty, satisfying beans? Got you covered. Great service? Some of the best servers in all of KC.

Ribs? Lately for us it’s been Woodyard’s Saturday special, 2 slabs for $26. Incredibly meaty and moist, babyback or spare ribs. They also do a sausage that has something extra (hint: bacon in the sausage.) You pass right by their outdoor smoker on your way in; if the pitmaster is around, chat him up; he’ll give you a sample.

Huge brisket sandwich, fresh cut fries and a big chilled mug of beer in a national institution? Bryant’s is THE place.

Harold and Nicole are correct. One of my Favorites is Smoke House. For burnt ends Smokin Guns is the place. Haven't been to Earl Quicks or BB's but that will be remedied.

B.B.'s lawnside is the best BBQ in KC. All of the other places are just for show.
