Gone Fishin'

While in Cabo San Lucas recently, Sky editor Liz Doyle had a larger than life experience: whale watching!

While in Cabo San Lucas recently (I stayed at the blissful Esperanza Resort), I had a larger than life experience: whale watching!

After a night out on the town the evening before, we didn’t really know what to expect from the whale watching tour. I was envisioning a small boat with each of us wearing those AWFUL orange life vests that seem to choke you no matter what. I couldn’t have been more wrong!

As we walked down to the marina, I almost jetted off to take in the area’s shopping (Hermes, Louis Vuitton and Movado—oh my!) but decided to stay with the group. Then I saw her: the Espiritu Santi, our 44-foot sailboat, gleaming at the end of the dock, waiting for our little adventure. Picture this: striped loungers at the bow, a skipper and our own personal bartender—even though it was 10 a.m. It felt like we were straight out of The Talented Mr. Ripley. With mimosas in hand and Pink Floyd playing, we were off.

The winter and early spring is whale season in Baja, as the whales come to the cove to give birth before continuing on. Even at the resort, we could see them breaching (aka whale jumping), but the closeness that we were about to witness was beyond me.

After cruising for an hour, we were on the lookout: we spotted several boats gathering nearby, and we made our way over in hopes of spotting a Humpback whale. Well, there was not just one, but a pod of five that the group was trailing … many the length of the boat.

While I could go on and on about the experience, I brought my Flip cam on the boat, so I will let the video do the rest of the talking. Enjoy!
