I am really excited about our June issue. So, here’s the back story:

Our May issue features Ricky Gervais on the cover. Inside is a fun
piece Steve Marsh wrote about Gervais, starting with a description of a
YouTube video he filmed with Elmo as a promotion for Sesame Street.
In the course of editing the story, Steve and I had a rather energetic
exchange about what made this funny. Steve thought it was the fact
that—in classic Ricky Gervais fashion—he was deconstructing the entire
situation and speaking directly to the muppeteer behind Elmo’s persona,
also complaining that he was the only one not getting paid on the set
(unlike the grip and Elmo and everyone else).

As editors and art directors, we always have “the story behind the story.” One little item in a magazine can sometimes have a back-story that takes longer to tell than the item you’re reading.

We’ve all heard the warning from the omnipresent airport “voice” that lots of bags look alike. While checking the tag on every black Samsonite that passes on the carousel will save you the embarrassment of walking off with someone’s dirty laundry, it just takes too long.

Did you know that the derivation of the word museum is from
ancient Greek, meaning a shrine to the muses? I didn’t, but it makes
sense. I’ve always thought of museums as places of celebration and
exploration. Places to take you outside of yourself for a while, if you
can open your mind and put aside thoughts of your impending work
presentation or the laundry piled up in the basement or your dinner
reservation for that night.

I’m not one for forwarding emails and links to You Tube-like videos. Though I enjoy the sharing, it’s just “one more thing.” But, I am making an exception. A good friend and colleague, a very cool, music-loving guy, shared this with our company yesterday—in turn, I share with you. I make this exception because of the global nature of the video. Trust me, it’ll leave you all warm and fuzzy inside. Tell 'em Gary sent ya.

. . . you never know whom you’ll be sitting next to.
Here’s a funny, small-world story. In the fall of 2007, my husband and I
attended the wedding of one of his colleagues on Martha’s Vineyard. We
opted to make it more than a weekend and arrived in Boston earlier in
the week to take in the dining, shopping and walking of the very
walkable, fabulous city. We stayed at the lovely Lenox Hotel, just a block off Newbury Street. Perfect.

Yes, I’m a Northern girl, but I do love Atlanta. Now, don’t think I only say that because of my new Delta connection. I’ve been to Hotlanta a handful of times in my adult years. Atlanta provided my first taste of a Krispy Kreme nearly ten years ago. I’ve roamed such neighborhoods as Virginia Heights and Little Five Points. I’ve walked the public spaces created for the Olympics. And I was awestruck when I took a tour of the legendary Fox Theater, which was built in the 1920s as the Yaarab Temple Shrine Mosque.

While getting ready to launch Sky, our publisher set up two weeks of launch events in five cities. I hit four. As we know, it’s important to court businesses that do business with us—and those we hope will do business with us. Don’t get me wrong, these were not short-straw cities; the events I made it to were in New York, Atlanta, Chicago, and LA. The trips were in and out, a day or two per city, so there was no time for museums or shopping.

Oh, boy. Here I go. Apparently I’m part of a blog again. I’ve dipped in and out of blogging over the past few years. And I always wrangle with the question, “Who cares what I have to say?” But, in reality, I have lots to share. As the newly appointed editor in chief of Sky—the relaunched onboard magazine for the world’s largest airline—the stories are endless.

About Sarah Elbert
As executive editor of Delta Sky, Sarah Elbert lassos the best writers she can find to cover the world—as well as contributing some prose of her own. Before coming to Sky, Sarah was editorial director of magazines including Northwest WorldTraveler and Carlson Wagonlit Travel's Postcards. She has been a newspaper editor, a freelance writer and an Associated Press reporter, riding with the White House travel pool (back in the Clinton days) and covering everything from natural disasters to a cat kidney transplant. Sarah has written for The New York Times, the New York Post, the New York Sun—but not the NY Daily News. She now lives in Minneapolis, which she finds lovely and underrated, but does occasionally miss Manhattan and the Staten Island Ferry. Sarah would like to think she could again go backpacking across Europe, and she still loves to travel, but she knows that train has left the station. It's just so much quicker to fly.
About Deborah Caulfield Rybak
Senior editor Deborah Caulfield Rybak interviewed the Who’s Who of Hollywood during her years as an entertainment industry reporter at the Los Angeles Times. She still prefers writing about the arts to almost any other journalistic activity, so it’s a good thing we’ve got her on that beat at Sky. She’s pocketed numerous journalism awards and co-written three books.
But that’s just her journalistic cred: she’s also worked as an FM deejay in Aspen, a speechwriter in Washington and an environmental film festival director in Colorado. She considers herself happiest when she’s out of town—and out of cellphone range. She’s hitchhiked across Kenya, spent the night atop a pyramid in Central America, hovered face-to-mandible with giant manta rays during a night dive in Hawaii and hiked the High Atlas mountains in Morocco. Still left on her to do list: Bhutan and marlin fishing.
About Liz Doyle
After a few years navigating the trenches of New York's fashion scene as a stylist assistant at Harpers Bazaar, fashion editor Liz Doyle is excited to be back in her childhood hometown of Minneapolis. When she isn't scouting the latest trends in fashion and travel, she moonlights at a local Parisian brasserie where she says "welcome" and "enjoy" a lot and occasionally tries to improve her French. Though her foray to the editorial side of the magazine industry is a new one, she welcomes the challenge and can't wait to see what this new adventure holds.
About Amanda Welshons
Associate online editor Amanda Welshons maintains the web and social media presence of Delta Sky. She enjoys using new media and exploring how different platforms enhance the reader experience. Based in Minneapolis, Amanda has several destinations on her bucket list including London, Paris and Sydney. She just spent a blissful week in St. Lucia for her honeymoon, and can't wait for upcoming trips to Chicago, Seattle, Vancouver and New York. When she’s not in the office, she's a pop culture junkie, soaking up as many movies, television shows and magazines as possible.
