It’s no mistake that one of Anchorage’s main thoroughfares is named Northern Lights Boulevard. After all, Alaska is one of the best places on earth to see the aurora borealis—flashes of radiant color dancing across the night sky, sometimes only for a few seconds, sometimes much longer. It’s impossible to predict when and where you can see them, but if you go to Alaska in the winter, you stand a very good chance. The absolute best time to see it is in the months of March and September, between midnight and 4 a.m. The farther north and away from city lights you can go will also improve your view. For the truly dedicated, you may have to make the trip north to Fairbanks, where the aurora is a nearly constant presence in winter and where many hotels will give you a wake-up call when they are particularly striking.
