Once the grounds of the royal palace, the sprawling National Gardens offer a respite of cool in the heart of the city, complete with fountains, a petting zoo and café. As you exit, note the colorful Evzones, guards wearing kiltlike skirts and pom-pom-bedecked footwear. The gardens are directly behind the Old Palace, or what is today the Greek Parliament building.
