Named after one of the United Kingdom’s chief industrial cities, Birmingham, the largest city in Alabama was established in 1871 and earned its two nicknames “The Magic City” and “The Pittsburgh of the South,” the second due to its major contributions to the iron and steel industry and the city’s stake in railroad manufacturing.
