Birmingham is well connected by interstate highways, so traveling around the city and neighboring Southeastern areas, such as Atlanta, is easily done by car. Within Birmingham, the local public transportation system, Metro Area Express (MAX), and numerous cab companies can get you where you need to go. For trips outside of Birmingham, the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM) is about 11 minutes from the downtown area. True to its railroad heritage, Amtrak’s Crescent train offers service to several Southern cities, such as Atlanta, New Orleans and Greensboro in addition to its trips from Birmingham to Washington D.C.
