Although Norman Maclean’s classic novella is set on the Blackfoot River in western Montana, the iconic fly-fishing scenes in the film version of A River Runs Through It were filmed in the picturesque Gallatin Canyon, south of Bozeman. The Gallatin River is simply one of the world’s classic trout streams, rich in rainbows and native cutthroat, and even a beginning angler can appreciate the stunning scenery of rugged cliff faces, soaring eagles and the occasional bighorn sheep. A half-dozen fly shops around Bozeman and Livingston can equip you and recommend fishing holes. Access sites are plentiful along U.S. 191 through the canyon. It’s a scenic drive and an afternoon well spent, even if the wily trout manage to outwit you.
