Type: Neighborhoods & Districts

As the sun sets, architecture- and art-lovers should head for the hills of this historic district, which towers high above the banks of the Danube. Here, you’ll find baroque and 19th-century palaces as well as a few medieval structures, including the newly renovated Mátyás-templom (Matthias Church). This 14th-century church features Gothic spires and gargoyles, but the most extraordinary feature is the tiled mosaic roof. Another of the neighborhood’s must-sees is Halászbástya (Fisherman’s Bastion), a hillside terrace with dramatic towers, colonnades, parapets and, most importantly, a spectacular view of Budapest’s most imposing structure, the monolithic Parliament building, just across the river from here.
