A total of eight bridges span the River Danube over Budapest. There’s the modern Megyeri Bridge with its dramatic white cables (reminiscent of Boston’s Zakim Bridge). There’s the Parisian-style Margaret Bridge, whose beauty has been slowly revealed as the city restores its carvings and graceful arches. But the city’s earliest bridge is still its most inspiring. Completed in 1849, the Széchenyi Chain Bridge provided the city’s first link between the banks of the Danube. Guarded by stone lions and featuring a stately display of cast-iron ornamentation, the bridge is a national source of pride.
