Travelers will find the Hungarian, or Magyar, language equally fascinating and frustrating—it sounds nothing like the other tongues of Europe. A member of the Uralic language family, Magyar’s closest relatives are Finnish and obscure Siberian languages like Khanty and Mansi. However, as any (English-speaking) Hungarian will tell you, these languages hardly resemble theirs. A tip for travelers: Don’t bother with deciphering the language’s peculiar grammar. Focus instead on learning helpful words and phrases including “jó napot” (hello) and “köszönöm” (thank you).
