El Tigre

El Tigre

Type: Neighborhoods & Districts

If you’re an adventurer who loves to daytrip your way through your travels, the hour train ride to the delta town of El Tigre is a pleasant excursion that costs only about 30 cents. Trains to the islands nestled into the delta of the Rio de la Plata leave about every hour from Retiro. The area is incredibly scenic with the merging of three rivers—The Tigre, The Lujan and the Reconquista, which means there’s water, water everywhere. A promenade follows along the riverbank where you can purchase tickets for boat rides on a variety of vessels from catamarans to kayaks. You can also hire a small boat with a driver and have him or her navigate you through the silty waters. You’ll find a number of cafés serving a variety of food, and if you decide to stay overnight, there are a handful of bed and breakfasts offering accommodations. During weekends, a market takes over the port, and the vendors here sell fresh produce and local handicrafts at much better prices than those you will find in the city proper. If you’re a nature lover, be sure to visit Martín García Island, a natural and historical reserve. For a moment of quirky enjoyment, check out the amusement park—it has just the right touch of kitsch for an afternoon-long adventure.
