Buffalo wings were invented at Buffalo’s Anchor Bar in 1964. The bar continues to serve its original recipe wings today. Buffalo has a number of monikers, the most notable of which is “The Queen City,” a name it was first given in the 1940s referring to the city’s status as the second largest city in New York State after New York City. Buffalo also has been called “The Nickel City” thanks to the bison that decorated the back of the Indian Head nickel in the early part of the 20th century. Additional names include “The City of Good Neighbors” and “City of Light.” Buffalo is host to the longest-running foot race in America—the annual YMCA Turkey Trot which started in Buffalo in 1896. In addition to Buffalo wings, the city was also the birthplace of Beef on Weck, a sandwich consisting of roast beef and horseradish on a kummelweck roll (a roll topped with pretzel salt and caraway seeds). A trip to the area is not complete without downing one of these.
