German Village Meeting Haus

Start at The German Village Meeting Haus, the cornerstone of everything German Village. Located in a red brick building that blends seamlessly with the surrounding historical homes, the Meeting Haus serves as German Village’s launching pad. Stop here to learn all about Columbus’ favorite historical neighborhood. Visitors can view films about German Village’s past and present, pick up free maps of the area and check out a few tour books. 588 S. Third St., 614-221-8888.

Caterina's Ltd.

Step into Caterina’s for all things European. Besides handcrafted German and Polish pottery, Caterina’s carries unique and imported housewares and beauty products, such as lavender-scented soaps from Provence. Known for blue-and-white Polish tableware, French linens and an array of Christmas ornaments, Caterina’s is the perfect spot to pick up souvenirs. Hours: M-W 11 a.m.-6 p.m., Th.-F 11 a.m.-7 p.m., Sa.-Su. noon-5 p.m. 571 S. Third St., 614-224-7224.

Katzinger’s Delicatessen

Stop in for a sandwich at Katzinger’s Delicatessen. For 25 years, this local deli has served up mouthwatering meals. Portions are generous; each sandwich comes in two sizes, big and huge, all served on Katzinger’s delicious bread. The standing favorite is the reuben sandwich. If you still have room or are craving something sweet, try a piece of the New York Style cheesecake. Katzinger’s also sells a variety of cheese, salami and other fares perfect for packing a picnic. The Book Loft

The Book Loft is no small shop. Made up of thirty-two rooms spread over four levels, The Book Loft is one of the largest independent bookstores in the country. Visitors often say that their favorite spots are the Book Loft’s outdoor courtyard and garden. For literary lovers this is the ultimate escape. Hours: Su.-Th. 10 a.m.-11 p.m., F-Sa. 10 a.m.-midnight. 631 S. Third St., 614-464-1774.

Schiller Park

South Third Street runs right into Schiller Park, one of Columbus’ most beautiful green spaces. From the walking trails to the ample picnic areas, Schiller Park is a must-see while in German Village. Don’t miss the statue of the girl with an umbrella in the fountain, or the statue of Schiller himself in the very center of the park. If visiting during fall, the foliage in Schiller Park is some of Columbus’ prettiest. 1069 Jaeger St., 614-645-3300.

When German settlers immigrated to Central Ohio, they founded Columbus’ German Village in the early 1800s. Today German Village is one of Columbus’ favorite attractions and features great parks, shops and restaurants.
