John D. Rockefeller had his winter home, The Casements, in Daytona Beach. James Gamble of Proctor & Gamble fame also wintered in Daytona Beach. Mary McLeod Bethune founded the historically black university Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach. Rev. Dr. Howard Thurman, a Daytona Beach native, created the non-violent philosophy utilized during the Civil Rights Movement. Greg Allman was raised in Daytona Beach. The best chance to spot celebs is during Speedweeks. Stars from TV to film to politics have visited for the races, including Britney Spears, Whoopi Goldberg, Ben Affleck, past presidents and, most recently, Fergie and her husband, Josh Duhamel. In March during Bike Week, the celebs fly under the radar, but everyone from Jay Leno and Michael Jordan to Kid Rock and Pamela Anderson have visited.
