Mary McLeod Bethune founded the historically black university Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach. Rev. Dr. Howard Thurman, a Daytona Beach native, created the non-violent philosophy utilized during the Civil Rights Movement. Greg Allman was raised in Daytona Beach. The best chance to spot celebs is during Speedweeks. Stars from TV to film to politics have visited for the races, including Britney Spears, Whoopi Goldberg, Ben Affleck, past presidents and, most recently, Fergie and her husband, Josh Duhamel.
