Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) is 20 miles southwest of the city and welcomes some 30 million passengers each year. A one-way taxi ride to downtown is $43.
As with most major cities, getting around Detroit is toughest during rush hours, especially with workers filling the downtown area in the morning and rushing out in the evening. Woodward and Jefferson Avenues are the major streets downtown, so try to avoid as best as possible. Taxis (call ahead) are a great alternative, as is the city’s public buses and rail system, The People Mover, which has been updated with mosaic tiles for a more inviting ride.
The Michigan Left: Just like New Jersey, Michigan also has its quirky driving rules. When driving on major divided highways and boulevards, you’re not allowed to make a left hand turn. Instead, you must turn right and then wait to make a U-turn about one quarter of a mile later on, first moving into a U-turn median and then, when traffic clears, you can finally complete the U-turn and go back through the intersection. Whew!
