The town was founded in 1828 on land that had previously been set aside for the western Cherokee Nation. Since then the city has tried to preserve much of its history with more than 50 places on the National Register of Historic places as of 2010, including Fayetteville Confederate Cemetery, the 37-acre Washington Willow Historic District and the Butterfield Overland Mail Route.
