For a taste of Hong Kong’s small traditional villages, experiencing Tai O is a fishing village is a must. Located on the western side of Lantau Island, Tai O is inhabited by the Tanka people who have lived in houses stilted above the water for generations. The town is divided by a narrow creek, and for the previous 85 years, villagers would cross the creek using a rope-drawn ferry. Now you can easily cross with the village’s new drawbridge—more efficient, but less charming.
