Colloquially called the Big Buddha, this bronze statue certainly earned it moniker. More than 100 feet tall and weighing about 280 tons, the statue took more than 12 years to complete. People from all over the world come to visit the Buddha, regardless of denomination. The Buddha sits with his right hand raised to deliver a blessing over mankind and nature. Wear a good pair of walking shoes and stretch out your legs first—you must ascend more than 200 stairs to view the statute. If you’ve worked up an appetite, do lunch at the Po Lin Monastery (heads up: they only serve vegetarian meals).
