The Grand Bazaar shopping experience is magical, heady and overwhelming at the same time. Plan to visit early to avoid the crowds, and do look around to take in the market’s historic architecture with its painted ceilings, domes and fountains as you stroll from storefront to storefront jammed with gems, hand-painted Iznik tiles and watery silk fabrics in rainbow-colored hues. And pack a map so that you remember at which of the Grand Bazaar’s four main gates you started your visit. Be prepared to weed through the trinkets and the endless array of knock-off Prada and Gucci handbags should you seek a quality Turkish carpet, kilim rug, ikat or suzani pillows or jewelry. “Hola, hello, bonjour!,” vendors will call out as you stroll through the Grand Bazaar’s 80 covered streets with their 4,000-odd shops. “Nice T-shirts, T-shirts, T-shirts! Hola! Hello! Best quality! Prada! Good carpets, best quality.”
