Lay of the Land

Kauai has one main road, the Kaumuali’i Highway, which runs along the coast in a semicircle connecting the major towns and cities. However, the rugged Napali coast is not accessible by road, so it’s not possible to make a complete circuit of the island by car. It’s called Route 50 from Lihue to the end of the road past the Barking Sands missile base, and Route 56 from Lihue to Hanalei on the north coast, but for all purposes it’s one road.
