Famed wildlife painter John James Audubon visited the Florida Keys in 1832 and sighted and painted 18 new species of birds for his “Birds of America” folio. While in Key West, Audubon stayed at the Geiger House, owned by John H. Geiger, a harbor pilot and master wrecker, which has since been transformed into a museum of the painter’s work that houses 28 of Audubon’s first-edition works. In fact, Audubon’s painting of the white-crowned pigeon features the Geiger tree found in the front yard of the house. Cool off as you take look at the Audubon prints inside the air-conditioned home, then explore the lush orchid-laden tropical gardens, which make up almost an acre of land
