Lexington is older than Kentucky, founded in June 1775 in what was then Virginia. It was once known as the Athens of the West for its cultured lifestyle. Today the city is ranked 10th in a census list of America's most educated cities with a population of more than 250,000. It’s also one of the world's seventeen cleanest cities according to Forbes. The metro population is about half a million.
