For most people, this museum, designated a National Historic Landmark, is probably best known as the scene of President Clinton’s 1992 and 1996 election night celebrations. It’s no wonder Clinton chose the site: The regal Greek Revival structure, begun in 1833 and finished in 1842, is the oldest remaining state capitol building west of the Mississippi. Although government functions have now moved to the Arkansas State Capitol (completed in 1915), legislative chambers and period rooms remain here, as well as a multimedia museum of Arkansas history with a special emphasis on women’s history, political history and historical programming for schoolchildren. The museum also features nationally recognized collections of Civil War battle flags, the inaugural gowns of Arkansas governors’ wives, Arkansas art pottery and African-American quilts.
