Louisville's “city of the dead” was a rural cemetery before Louisville's growth in the 1800s. Among the 130,000 citizens interred there today are both Union and Confederate soldiers, Colonel Harland Sanders (philanthropist and founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken), General George Rogers Clark and numerous local luminaries. The nearly 300-acre grounds are a popular walking site for locals, with miles of paved trails that follow the irregular landscape in a pleasing curvilinear fashion. The cemetery is also one of the country's loveliest arboretums, with some 500 types of trees offering shade and greenery, and spectacular color in the spring and fall. Five lakes and a quarry are also found on the grounds, which are located over a series of limestone caverns. It's a peaceful respite from the busy city outside its walls.
