A classic Victorian Gothic masterpiece, Manchester Town Hall is a grand setting that can be taken in for free or intimately toured for a very modest price. This “classic of its age” is claimed to be the best single monument to High Victorian taste in the whole of Britain and is a key symbol of the city. Take the regular tour at 2 p.m. on Saturdays and most Wednesdays starting at the nearby Manchester Visitor Information Center. Or, if you’re more of a do-it-yourself kind of person, sign in at reception, buy the excellent 50-page booklet describing the structure and take yourself around for a look at the cotton flowers, the fabulous sculpture of Sir John Barbirolli and the admirable Great Hall ceiling.
