The Peabody, one of Memphis’ finest and oldest four-star hotels. This downtown hotel, built in 1869 and relocated in 1925, has been the hotel of choice for many discerning Memphis visitors. President George W. Bush stayed here in 2005. And this past December, TLC’s Jon and Kate (and their eight kids) filmed an episode of the reality show “Jon and Kate Plus Eight” at the hotel while in town to donate toys for
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
The Peabody is perhaps best known for its marching ducks, which are paraded through the hotel lobby twice every day (at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.). The famous fowl got fancy new digs in late 2008, in honor of the 75th anniversary of Peabody’s duck tradition. The new state-of-the-art rooftop “duck palace” comes complete with a granite sun deck, swimming pool and a breathtaking view of the Mississippi River.
Of course, humans are offered high-quality lodging as well. Each room in The Peabody boasts flat-screen televisions, comfy beds with 1,000-thread-count sheets and 24-hour room service. Rates range from $240 to $375.
The Peabody houses several restaurants and gift shops, including fashion designer
Bernard Lansky’s upscale clothing boutique. Pick up duck-themed souvenirs at
Lucky Duck, or decorate your home with imported jade statuettes from
Samuel Nathan Galleries. Then enjoy a romantic French-Asian fusion dinner at
Chez Philippe or a juicy steak at
Capriccio Grill. And don’t forget to relax with a massage from
Gould’s Day Spa & Salon, a full-service spa in the lower lobby of the hotel.
