2013 was a big year for Michael Hudman and Andrew Ticer, the chefs behind Memphis’ hottest restaurants, Hog & Hominy and Michael Andrew Italian Kitchen. They were among Food & Wine’s Best New Chefs, GQ’s Alan Richman listed Hog & Hominy as one of 12 Most Outstanding Restaurants of 2013, and it made it onto Bon Appétit’s round up of the country’s 50 best new restaurants. And it’s not all hype—the food is that good. At Hog & Hominy, a perfect fusion of classic Italian recipes and Southern American flavors keeps the critics and diners wanting more. Try any of the pizzas, from a traditional margherita to the “Brassica” with smoked guanciale and fire-roasted broccoli and garlic. They also have an indulgent poutine, crispy sweetbreads and a killer rabbit cassoulet. Skipping dessert would be sin—the peanut butter pie or bourbon pecan curd pie will certainly call your name. There’s no reservations here, but there is a bocce ball court outside to entertain you while you wait.
