GO THERE: A room at the Brick boutique hotel will put you smack dab in the center of Colonia Roma, the fashionable nabe that’s home to numerous galleries and boutiques. Make sure to stop by the Mike Salas Showroom, carrying up-and-coming local designers. Farther out, you’ll find Celeste House (akin to Paris’ Colette), which offers a brilliantly curated mix of designer pieces and found goods in the swanky Polanco neighborhood. Save time for a trip down the “floating gardens” of Xochimilco, a network of shallow canals south of Mexico City proper. And no trip to the metropolis is complete without stopping by Frida Kahlo’s childhood home, now a museum. —Elizabeth Doyle
