The south is filled with grand old dames, and we’re not talking about the region’s stalwart women but the graceful mansions that sprung up during the 19th century and were lovingly maintained as the decades waltzed by. If your twin thrills are architecture and history, strolling through the grand salons of these elegant ladies will be a memorable experience. The Belle Meade Plantation, which has been dubbed the “Queen of the Tennessee Plantations,” is an antebellum mansion built in 1853 that also happens to be home to English Derby winner Iroquois. In fact, it is renowned as a thoroughbred stud farm with horses such as Seabiscuit, War Admiral and Smarty Jones all tracing their lineage back to here.
