Get away quickly from Manhattan, and enjoy the natural beauty at The New York Botanical Garden.

  1. Governors Island. The former military base is now a public park with historical buildings and a summer concert series. Get there by ferry.
  2. West Point. Take a guided tour of the grounds, watch the USMA band perform and view the extensive American military history collection at the museum. Get there by train, bus.
  3. Jones Beach. Make a perfect day of it and hit the beach on Jones Island before a concert at the outdoor amphitheater. The summer lineup includes Kenny Chesney, No Doubt and The Fray. Get there by train, bus.
  4. Woodbury Common. This premium outlet outpost has more than 200 stores offering designer duds at prices that can’t be beat. Get there by train, bus.
  5. Rhinebeck. Tour the Vanderbilt Mansion or the home of FDR, then grab a bite to eat at The Beekman Arms Inn, America’s oldest operating inn. Get there by train.
  6. The Cloisters. The medieval outpost of The Metropolitan Museum of Art perched at the very top of Manhattan is easily accessible, yet a world away. Get there by subway, bus.
  7. Dia:Beacon. What used to be a Nabisco box-printing facility now houses a permanent collection of art from the 1960s to the present as well as exhibitions. Get there by train.
  8. Ellis Island. Pack a picnic and spend the day exploring America’s front door, which welcomed more than 12 million immigrants from 1892 to 1954. Rangers lead guided tours throughout the day. Get there by ferry and Statue Cruises.
  9. The New York Botanical Garden. This amazing oasis in the Bronx is the largest botanical garden in the United States at 250 acres. Get there by train, subway, bus.
  10. Atlantic City. All the thrills of Vegas— just a two-and-a-half-hour train ride from NYC. Get there by train or arrive in style on the Atlantic City Express Train Service, complete with leather seats and a full bar (weekends from Penn Station).
