A number of rental shops and outfitters lead sea-kayaking trips out into the Atlantic. The best of these is Maine Island Kayak Company on Peaks Island. In addition to beginner and advanced kayaking courses, the group leads half-, full- and multi-day trips up the coast and through the nearby island chains. The Delights of Casco Bay tour shows off jagged cliffs, historic forts and remote rocks that attract whole herds of sunning seals. Guides know how to navigate the tides (as will you after a couple days on the water), and they’ll fill you in on the ocean ecology and science of marine life that makes the Maine coast such a rich and vibrant ecosystem. Full-day trips include an excellent picnic lunch.
