The city of Portland, Oregon, was named in honor of Portland, Maine, when the West Coast city was founded in 1845. Portland, Maine, itself had only existed for 25 years at the time. Although the city was settled in 1633, it was known as Portland, Massachusetts, until 1820, when Maine became the 23rd state.
