Lay of the Land

Most of Portland is a sort of awkward boot-shaped peninsula sticking out into Casco Bay. The Portland International Jetport is located off the peninsula just behind the heel, and a taxi or rental car is your best bet for getting into town. U.S. Highway 295 bisects the city, heading north toward Freeport and Brunswick, and most tourist destinations are found east of the highway. The Amtrak Downeaster also serves Portland, although the station is awkwardly located, requiring a taxi or a short bus ride into downtown.
