Most visitors to Puerto Vallarta have no idea that the Vallarta Botanical Gardens exist just 12 miles south of the city. Situated on more than 20 acres of land, the gardens present 3,000 different species of plants, from agaves to orchids. The non-profit institution opened to the public in 2005 with the goal of building Mexico’s greatest botanical garden. The Vallarta Botanical Gardens focuses on nurturing endangered native Mexican plants in it propagation nursery and re-foresting the land, which was used for ranching and deforested more than 30 years ago. On site, the Hacienda de Oro Visitor Center and Restaurant is the main structural focus of the gardens and offers pizza and salads as well as Mexican specialties. The setting is spectacular, and the destination is not known by most, but it is certainly worth the trip.
