Who’s ever heard of a free water park? That’s what the city of Reno decided to create when it set aside a section of the Truckee River known for its spectacular whitewater rapids, then enhanced the natural beauty to make the thrills and chills even more extreme. Truckee River Whitewater Park now has 11 drop pools for a total of a half-mile of bone-jarring rapids. The city also installed 7,000 tons of smooth flat-top rocks, so there are plenty of places to lie in the sun and watch the veteran kayakers show off their maneuvers. The course is class II and III, but beginners are allowed, so it’s boater beware. Beginners may want to start with inner tubes to soften the bounce.
