The greater Reno metropolitan area is actually made up of two cities, Reno and Sparks, which sit side by side in Truckee Meadows, a high desert valley at the foot of the Sierra Nevada. Reno has 220,000 people and Sparks has another 180,000, so the two cities are fairly similar in population size, but Reno has most of the business, commerce and attractions. If you like your nightlife a tad unruly, however, some of the best music and liveliest scenes are to be found in Sparks, where the real estate is cheaper, business is less closely regulated and a wrong-side-of-the-tracks vibe keeps things loose.
