Designed in 1847, the cemetery has gorgeous views overlooking the James River. Many of its occupants date to the 18th century because their resting places were lost or threatened over time. As a result, the cemetery is an inspiring and informative place to learn about the figures who built the foundation of our country. An 1869 pyramid marks the grave of 18,000 men who were killed during the Civil War. Historical walking tours are available Monday through Saturday starting at 10 a.m., April through October.
