Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport (often called Fiumicino Airport) is about 22 miles from the city center. The express train, operated by Trenitalia, goes directly to Termini Station in the city in 30 minutes and costs about $14. The non-stop trip runs twice an hour, otherwise, local trains leave once every 15 minutes. Taxis from and to the airport have fixed rates of 40 Euros (about $50) and drivers should not charge additional fees for luggage or extra passengers. Always make sure to get a taxi from a taxi stand.
Rome has a great public transport system which is well integrated. Tickets can be used on metro, buses, and trams. Buy your biglietti (or tickets) at newsstands, tabacchi (look for the ‘T" signs outside), and metro stations. Tickets cost around $1.30 and are valid for 75 minutes from the moment they are first stamped. Use the same ticket for buses, trams, and one Metro journey. Be sure to validate or stamp ticket in the yellow machines when getting on. Or buy a 1, 3 or 7 day pass for $5, $14 and $20. There’s a two-line metro system but because of all of underground ruins, it cannot go into historic areas. The metro runs about every 7-10 minutes, from 5:30am until 11:30pm every day, except Saturday when it runs until 12:30am.
By law, taxis are not permitted to pick up on the street. Instead, you can find taxi stands throughout the city. Make sure to take a city authorized one. Look for the “TAXI” sign on the roof. It should be white or yellow with the letters SPQR on the front. And the taxi should contain a meter.
