Before renting a car, try your hand at using the local transportation. Getting around a new city on your own, like a local, is an exciting twist to the everyday.
A car is the best way to explore San Diego’s outskirts, but there are alternatives. The
San Diego Trolley loops around downtown, making it easy to connect to neighborhoods such as Little Italy. Buses go all the way to the tip of
Point Loma. And the
Coaster, a comfy commuter train, runs regularly up the scenic coast from the downtown San Diego train station to the beach towns of northern San Diego County. The Coaster also connects to Amtrak and destinations up the coast.
