Located at the John Wayne Airport, the Lyon Air Museum was founded by Major General William Lyon of the United States Air Force as a place to exhibit a fleet of World War II-era aircraft. This 30,000-square-foot museum features a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, a North American B-25 Mitchell, and other planes, military vehicles, military motorcycles and automobiles from the 20th century. Volunteer docents will lead you through the museum, providing information on the aircraft and automobiles and their roles in WWII. This museum truly brings an era of American history to life. Tours take about an hour; if you’re bringing a group of 10 or more, please call ahead. The museum is located on the west side of the airport. From the freeways, take Baker, which will turn into Ike Jones Road and jogs around “road closed” signs; follow Ike Jones Road to the end to arrive at the museum.
