After Christopher Columbus’s brother Bartholomew arrived in 1496—and declared Santo Domingo a city in 1498—this area became the first official city of the New World. This 12-block historical haven is a unique part of the city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is home to several of the city’s best monuments, restaurants and bars.
