The Colonial Zone, the city in which Bartholomew Columbus originally settled, holds several firsts in the Americas, including the first cathedral, street, hospital and more. Due to its historical importance, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992. Santo Domingo was also named the American Capital of Culture for 2010 by the International Bureau of Capitals of Culture.
