GO THERE: Though known as one of the most haunted cities in the South, Savannah is more alive today than ever. Book a stay at the historic Mansion on Forsyth Park, a beautifully revived hotel that melds just enough Old South style with modern amenities (be sure to stop in at its upstairs lounge, Casimir’s, a hot spot for live jazz). For dinner, try Elizabeth on 37th’s signature blue crab cake over creamed corn (yum), or if it’s Southern comfort food you’re after, head to Mrs. Wilkes’ Dining Room, home to fried chicken, okra, collard greens and arguably the best sweet potato soufflé east of the Mississippi. —Elizabeth Doyle
