Seoul was first settled in 18 B.C., but the megacity is now home to 12 million people and has a population density more than twice as concentrated as New York City. Seoul takes pride in its sense of historical coherence, a unique thing indeed for a city that has experienced numerous societal disruptions due to political unrest. During recent years, the city has directed its attention toward the preservation of historical artifacts and a championing of traditional neighborhoods. That said, a striving toward modernity is still a major part of the city’s character. It’s the paradox that makes the culture in this major city so interesting.
